The History of Epiphany Church

Dulaney Valley began as Epiphany Chapel, a parish mission of the Church of the Epiphany located in Baltimore City. In 1958 a decision was made by the Baltimore church to establish a mission just as the Church of the Redeemer had created them in 1895. The first worship service was held in the "bath house" of a near by community association on April 24, 1960 with the Reverend Hill officiating.

In September, 1960, a tract of land was purchased on the west side of Pot spring Road. Aided by the parent church, the mission congregation launched its first building fund campaign. Ground was broken on August 23, 1964 and the first service was held in the new building on June 20, 1965. During this five year span, the name of the church changed from Epiphany Chapel to Epiphany, Dulaney Valley.

Epiphany flourished over the next ten years, experiencing significant growth. In 1975, the vestry planned for a small two-story wing to be added on the east side of the existing building. This addition was completed and dedicated that year and provided more classroom space and a common room area. A nursery school was started in 1967 and was licensed as a day-care center in 1981.

The vestry, recognizing the growth of the parish family and the strong commitment to its spiritual development, in 1980 began a long-range planning process. A committee identified the single most important need for the parish was additional space. Renovations provided space for classrooms, day care expansion and office space. A new tracker pipe organ replaced the electric organ and new stained glass nave windows were installed. A larger common room and meeting space was included, as well as some undeveloped storage areas. At the same time the altar and Narthex area was reversed to provide a revitalized worship space.

In 1990, Epiphany began strategic planning, a process by which the parish envisioned its future and in which a plan was developed to achieve that vision of the future. Epiphany's vision includes an intentional effort to see that all of its community life is grounded in the spirit. Lay people have become increasingly involved by participating in worship as acolytes, oblationers, lectors, chalicists, sacramentalists and those who administer the laying on of hands for healing. Over the years, Epiphany Episcopal Church, Dulaney Valley has experienced numerous challenges and changes. The spirit which brought the congregation together initially has persevered, and the information gained in the process has allowed for creative change and a renewed striving to see and do God's will.
