Epiphany Episcopal Church

Children and Youth

Church School Programs

The members of Epiphany Episcopal take pride in the parish's reputation as among the most family-friendly in the Diocese of Maryland. Church School is an essential part of fostering the spiritual growth of our children. In order that they may know God's loving presence in their lives, we will:
Epiphany's Church School is divided into age-appropriate divisions. We follow curriculums widely used among the Episcopal church, making adjustments when appropriate to fit the needs of our community.

Nursery: Birth - 2 Years

The nursery is staffed by an adult and a youth assistant for infants and young children up to three years of age. The nursery is located on the ground level, at the foot of the stairs found at the parish office end of the building. Cribs are available as are toys for toddlers. Please leave instructions with the caregivers regarding any special needs for your child.

Godly Play: 3 - 5 Years

Godly Play provides an opportunity for children to experience God in the midst of play. Young children benefit from learning what it means to enter their own sacred space, to worship, experience stories based on scripture and to use crafts to express what they have learned from the story. A Greeter will be downstairs to greet your child as he/she enters the classroom. A Storyteller will engage your child in biblical stories and parables using a variety of media such as wooden biblical figures, felt, and sand. This is an experiential approach in which the child is encouraged to "play" with the objects that tell the story. There is time for the children to interact with one another and a Children's Feast. Classroom #4 is located downstairs. As you enter the building on the west side, follow the stairs leading to the lower level immediately to your right.

ECC: Grades 1 - 5

ECC, the Church School program name for elementary-school-aged children, takes its name from the Episcopal Church Curriculum used for that age group. The curriculum follows the narrative of the Biblical story simultaneously highlighting Episcopal customs and practices. Unit themes are built on four foundations: Old Testament, New Testament, Sacraments and Church. Presently there are two classes divided by age groups.

Journey to Adulthood: Grades 6 - 12

Step 1: Rite 13 (Grades 6 - 8)

Rite 13 is a program assisting young people in the middle-school-aged group as they take the first steps of passage away from their families and into their own lives. It begins with a liturgical celebration of the gift of womanhood and manhood. During these two years, the community acknowledges the gift of gender, celebrates the amazing creative power and potential of these young people, and creates a safe haven to explore new ideas, new interests and new abilities.
